New display tech: The walk through fog screen.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Saw on ars-technica.

http://www.fogscreen.com/

"The walk-thru fog screen is a novel and intriguing method for forming a superior quality physically penetrable dry fog display. It is a break-through technology, literally! The key features are that the screen is flat, enabling high-quality projections, and walk-thru is possible. The fog screen feels like nothing and does not make things wet. It creates a magical effect as if the imges are floating in thin air. This work has international patents pending. "
...

"The basic components of the screen are a laminar, non-turbulent airflow, and a thin fog screen (or any particles) injected into and inside a laminar flow. Created this way, the fog screen is an internal part of the laminar airflow, and remains thin, crisp, and protected from turbulence. When the screen is formed, images can be either rear- or front-projected onto it. The screen can be translucent (as in the images below) or fully opaque. Our current fog screen prototype already proves the operating principle with excellent results. The quality, size, and other features of the screen will be enhanced in the coming weeks."

Looks pretty fucking cool...I want to see these things as advertisements in public places.

Very cool, I don't know what exactly you would use if for besides a really expensive decoration. But more important that guy in the video looked like a real tool.

Advertising would probably be the target of this. But for some people it'd be great having a TV that could suddenly pop out of nowhere in their living room, that ability alone would get it sold to many people.

It could also be used for HUDs for vehicles and even cars. Run a IR camera and overlay the image over the windshield or somehting

I saw something like this used as a special effect in a theatre to create a ghost effect. It looked quite neat

Not yet, but in time.

It wont be in homes for 5+ years at the least, in that time it could be perfected.

Cool, but ya know a year from now they'll find out that the fog causes cancer or some shit.

Hmm it should work for unregistered people (partner=GOOGLE links do). That's the link from the front page of slashdot.

Registration for NYTimes is free, anyways (and I just put in fake info ).
