or....a keyboard that has midi built in. Does anybody know of an economical one for sale or possible trade?

Did you look on Ebay? Probably your best bet.

Budget?
You can find controllers within any price range, but while you most likely don't need an 88-key controller which feels exactly like a piano, a 3 1/2 octave plastic POS with no velocity or pressure sensitivity could also be a waste of money at any price.

I'll keep that in mind. Im naive to the whole thing. Right now, I see the need for drums and bass but once I get into it I might wanna do alot more.

w3rd!
3 1/3 octave POS - fair enough. But pressure sensitivity is definitely a must.

Thanks. I'll remember that when purchasing one

Well...I must admit to being woefully ignorant of what's out there for keyboars/contollers right now. I bought my Roland XP-50 six years ago or so. It's probably a dinosaur right now.
Here are a couple things you might want to look at to see if you can find used. Roland XP-10

Korg X-5

Yamaha SO3

I know there a slew of cheaper consumer models out there that have midi capability, but the samples become less quality as you go down in price.
Here is a consumer model Yamaha that doesn't look too bad. It says it's midi compatable, but I'm not sure if that means it has just a midi out or if it has midi out/in/thru. You need both the midi in and out if you want what you recorded on you computer to play back through the keyboard.

Here is a whole page of things for you to wade through. Keep in mind when you are looking at them you probably want touch sensitive or velocity sensitive keys and midi compatability. The more voices (polyphony) the better. The more expensive models have 64 voices. As you go down they have 32 voices or 16 voices. If you are recording a midi part and then playing it back one by one to record it back to audio, 16 could get you by. But if you program drums, keys, bass, strings to play back all at once you probably want at least 32.

Hope that helps some. I started with a cheaper prosumer model Yamaha back 10 years ago or so. It did not have velocity sensitive keys and had 16 voice polyphony and you wouldn't believe what I had to pay for that back then. About as much as the first 3 I linked for you up on top. It was a decent enough start back then. You can get started on this with just about any budget really.
But beware of GAS .
I did not hear "My Heart Goes On". I'll check it out when I get a chance.
I wouldn't mind having a crack at the vocal on "I Swear". As long as you are in no hurry for the vocal. I actually have a small backlog of paying vocal demos to do right now. Of course...the paying customers come first . But yeah, I'd love to do it for s******s. I love that song. I did it at a Karaoke place down in Daytona Beach once. My wife and I were there for our anniversary. You wouldn't believe the chicks that were hitting on me & even pestering my wife about me after that, even though I announced THIS SONG IS FOR MY WIFE ON OUR ANNIVERSARY. LOL...well...they were drunk, so that 'splains a lot .

Thanks man. I 'll check those out.
And I wanted to try the vocals as well. Singing is what got me into music....HS and college...and after.

That sounded great!!! I assume you did the guitar. Where did the backing track come from. It sounded pretty darn good!! I'm suitably impressed.

{OF}Gort did the keyboards and midi and he made the song.
Btw..I met a guy that has a doctorate in music..explained my situation to him..and he suggested I stay away from the midi slave and just get another keyboard with built in midi. For some reason he thought that would be the best for what I was trying to do ...which is mainly use the midi for drums and bass.
He also thought that since Ntrack had a midi source selct that it might incorporate midi sounds already. That would save me having to buy special midi software wouldnt it? Think I'll mosey on over to Ntrack's wbsite and do some research on it.

I don't disagree with that at all. A midi controller does nothing but send information to your sequencer (n-track I guess you are using). You still need something to make at information sound like the notes/beats/instruments. If you got a keyboard that had sampled sounds on it you could create the midi tracks and then have the midi tracks you created play back through the keyboard which could then send that audio to n-track to record a sound file.
If you went the pure midi controller route, you would need some sort of software synth or external sound module in order to make audio tracks.
The advantage of using a soft synth is that you get a lower noise floor. My Roland XP-50 is terrbly noisy. The noise floor is about -54db which when you start stacking track after track starts to add up noise wise. That is how I used to do it though and it does work fine. I did "The Gift" that way (at www.johnkscott.com if you want to check it out). Oh...that was before I had my good soundcard too. That was done on a SBLive Value card. I just wish my playing was a little tighter.
As far as n-track incorporating midi sounds, I don't think n-track itself has any (I could be wrong). If it works the along the same lines as Sonar, it would pull in midi sounds from sources you designate (one of which might be your soundcard if you have one that has that capablilty). I know the Soundblaster had general midi sounds with it. I can't imagine that almost any consumer sound card wouldn't anymore.
