Problem: When you start Microsoft Word (2000 SR-1), you see the startup page, then the computer freezes. You have to CTRL-ALT-DEL about 4 times to reboot the machine.

Computer: purchased in 2001, a Dell home computer, with Windows Millenium Edition. 128 MB RAM, all software is legit.

This problem started about a month or two ago. Went to the PCPitStop website, did a virus scan, and it said it found W32.MyDoom.F in the C:\_restore\temp folder.

BUT: I went to the Symantec website, and followed the 5 steps to remove MyDoom:

1. Disable "restore"
2. Get latest Norton virus definitions
3. Restart machine in Safe Mode
4. Run full Norton virus scan (92,000 files, no viruses found)
5. Go to Registry Editor, change some values and delete some keys.

I didn't find any suspicious keys under HKLM or HKCU, and I didn't find a key called shell either.

So I'm beginning to think that (a) MyDoom is not causing the problem with MS Word, and/or (b) MyDoom is not even on this machine.

As soon as I enable "restore", I see a file called A0000001.cpy in the restore\temp folder. The folder size is 2 MB, even though I see only 4 files in there, totalling 72 KB. I cannot delete or rename the .cpy file.

Anyone here experience this problem? I'm assuming 128 MB memory should be enough to run MS Word 2000?

Help!!

What else is running on this system? Do you have a large/resizable swap space? Yes, Word "should" run with only 128mb ram (it'll swap for sure and run slow, but it should run). It's probably crashing due to a conflict with other software.

BTW: If you're running any Norton products at all, those would be the first things I would remove.

Finally got the answer. The virus screwed up normal.dot (a file that Word uses when it boots up). Deleted both copies of that file, and now it works fine.
