Asus K8V Deluxe and Raid

Hi,

I guess I am a generation or two behind with all this SATA and Raid stuff.....I bought this barebones system (Athlon 64) and it came with 1 120gb maxtor SATA hard drive, as advertised. This makes me ask "Why the hell would they bother selling a single SATA drive when this MB obviously requires 2 drives to create one of the RAID configurations."

I cannot even get past the RAID config screen at bootup (because there is only one drive in it) and I wanted to see how this thing flew, dammit

I don't really need RAID, but I guess I will set it up if I need to. I was mainly assuming that this SATA drive would be the next step past IDE for speed, so that is why I settled for it. It was part of the advertised barebones package.

So my question is this: am I correct in assuming there is no way to use a single SATA drive on this particular MB that seems to be chock full of RAID controllers?

Thanks

You need a minimum of two drives to use SATA RAID. It shouldn't be a problem though, you can normally run a single drive in that system.

I don't know why you can't get past the RAID bootup though. Have you looked for BIOS updates of the board?

Hi Veky,

I'll try it again tonight. I just couldn't seem to enter BIOS setup, because the RAID config screen seemed intent on coming up first. I guess I'm just not fast enough on the DEL key or something. Now that I know I should be able to, maybe I can accomplish it

I am not having any luck with this m/b. No matter what I try to do, there is positively no way to get into the bios setup. I'm sure if I could do this, then I might have a chance to change a setting that needs changing.

I wonder if it would be safe to try to flash this bios, even though I cannot seem to access it? It is already at version 1004 but there is a 1005 out, too.

There might be something else going on here. The stock BIOS should be just fine. Did you check to see if the drive is on the sata 1 conection on the motherboard? There are four ports for sata, make sure your on the right one. Also you can run 1 drive you dont have to run any raid at all. Just try shutting the computer down and as soon as you start it back up start hitting the del key untill the bios screen pops up. Hell try hitting the F1 and F2 key...lol Better yet use the jumper to reset your bios.

The Promise 20378 RAID controller incorporated two Serial ATA and one parallel connectors with RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 0+1 functions while the VT8237 RAID controller provides another two Serial ATA connectors for RAID 0 and RAID 1 functions. The K8V is the ideal solution to enhance hard disk performance and data backup protection without the cost of add-on cards.
