i wonder if this seems normal. i get around 55c idle and about 57 under heavy loads. using a volcano12 cooler. was wondering if this was avg or above normal hmm

That's not unusual and not dangerous for that CPU, but it is rather high, especially with a good cooler. I'd remove and clean the cpu and heatsink (and lap the heatsink if it's not smooth), then reseat it to see if it was just too much thermal paste.

90% of the time it's just a tiny air pocket trapping heat, but it could also be a bad sensor (have you tried other boards?) or just a "hot chip". I have a P3 Tualatin (1.4ghz) which consistantly runs over 50C while my other identical chips all run below 40C. No change to socket, heatsink or compound have a significant effect. I just put a better fan on it and leave it alone.

You could also check for any bios upgrades.
I have an asus a7n running an AMD 2800+ that reported
incorect cpu temputures untill I upgraded the bios.
That fixed the problem.

It's a bit high, especially w/ a volcano 12. Would be best to stay under 50c. You might not have good contact with the hs or too much thermal goop.
Try taking the heatsink off, clean it with something lint free such as a coffee filter and isopropyl alcohol if needed. Make sure its about 90% alcohol so it doesn't leave a residue. Re-apply with a paper thin layer of some artic silver ceramique a few minutes later (my choice, some will argue this, but it works great and is non-conductive).
