Ok, here is what i want to do... and i'm just wrapping my mind around it ..
ok I currently have an eight port network sharing the internet through a smoothwall machine
Cable modem ++++++ Smoothwall Firewall/NAT server ======== d-link 8 port switch ------- nodes
now because my smoothwall computer does the sharing and protecting of my network I want to add a wireless router to the switch and allow my laptop and pda shared access to the internet as well .... but i'm wondering do i really need a router for this ... or do i need a access point? This is where i'm just getting myself a bit confused... anyways thoughts on this would be great.
as a side note when i go to college I want to use the wireless router as a way to broadcast a shoutcast server in my residents ... so thoughts on this would be greatful too ... i'll also be using 802.11g as the standard ...

i ended up picking up a linksys wireless G router/AP ... now i have the lappie up and running on the network as well i locked down the wireless point for just my lappie and i'm currently running WPA-PSK aswell it is a 256bit key with mac address only permit ACL ... i feel sorry the dumb twit that trys to get access to this network ... o and i turned off the SSID so it isn't broadcasting
