Choppy video/sound

It seems in most DivX vids I watch, the audio/picture gets choppy in places. Some do it longer but it seems the shorter the video, the more it stutters. Also one thing of note is that they all use PCM audio.

The only codecs I have installed that affect these files are DivX 5 Pro, XVid and the standard windows MP 9 codecs.

Is there a viable seperate PCM codec I should be using?

What's your hardware and driver situation like?
Have you tested to see if it happens on DivX without audio?
Have you tried encoding videos with different options to test other audio/video streams?

XP 1600+
Radeon 8500 (128MB DDR version)
Sound Blaster Live X-Gamer

Doesn't seem to matter what video/sound drivers I use. I've tried several versions of each.

DivX with no audio doesn't have the problem. It seems directly related to those using PCM streams. If I try to re-encode them, I still have the choppiness. Obviously somethings wrong with my PCM audio decoder.

That's a tough one. It could be a physical problem with the sound card, a PCI bus issue or entirely software.

Make sure Directsound drivers are working (run DXDiag).
Make sure chipset drivers (Via?) are up to date.
Check PCI (latency) settings in bios.
Swap the sound card out with another.

Found it. It seems to have been caused by two issues.

For the record:
1. Never try to play videos off the same drive (exact partition even) as your paging file
2. Especially if for some strange reason DMA was disabled for that device.

I think my roommate's been messing with the comp again. Time to change passwords.

I run videos off my pagefile drive/partition, no problems. But yeah, maybe not having DMA enabled was an issue.
