Good cooler?

Well, with all the overclocking, my xp 2600 @ 2200MHz is getting pretty hot (51-56C), so I'm thinking about buying a new CPU fan and heatsink and I found this:

http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1745.htm

Found it for $27 and free shipping at http://www.buyxtremegear.com/a1745.html

Looks pretty nice and gets good reviews, but I just want a second opinion before I buy it or other recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

No, it's not very good and the fan can get pretty loud.

Any other suggestions for under $30? And I really don't care about the noise as my case already sounds like a 747 engine.

I'm pretty sure you can get a Thermalright SK7 and some fan or a Zalman 7000Al-Cu for under 30$, they're both awesome.

Don't get me wrong, the Volcano 12 is an okay cooler but these ones beat the jebus out of it.

If you do buy it, make sure the fan is between 3000 and 3500 RPM. Trust me, you don't want it running at 5000 RPM.

Also, did you have any experience with using TECs? Are those any good if cooled by a fan of that sort? Or do they work with only water/freon cooling?

What's a TEC?

Posted by: Shurik

Figured you of all the people would be familiar with that.
TEC stands for thermoelectric cooling. They are also called Peltiers. It's basically a device made of a semiconductor sandwiched between 2 ceramic plates. When electricity is passed through the semiconductor, one of the plates get hot while the other one gets cold. Usually, the cold side is put on the CPU and the hot side needs to be cooled with a fan and heatsink or water or freon cooling system.

You can read more about it here:

Peltiers are mostly used with watercooling. Haven't heard of any using it with aircooling.

I know thermaltake makes one called SubZero (or something like that), and am pretty sure Swiftech does as well. I haven't had any experience with them myself, so I can't tell you how good they are.

Yes, I know what a Peltier is, you should've said so in the first place.

And no, it's not worth it, too much hassle.

Well, anyway, I bought the volcano 12 and it seems to be pretty decent. With arctic silver 5 between it and the cpu, the idle temp is 42C and busy at roughly 50C at a noise level equal to my case fans. I can put it higher, but then it sounds like a jet engine. On the instructions for arctic silver, it says it may need as long as a week to reach its best efficiency level, so I guess I can expect even lower temperatures later on. Thanks for all the help and advise.
