n00b question about recordable DVD discs(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?
I have to buy a recordable DVD disc for the burner at work, and I didn't think there would be two types. When I got to the electronics store, I saw two formats. The salesman told me they are not compatible, I have to match the correct DVD with the burner.
Memorex had both kinds, same price.

Actually there are 3 types.
DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RAM
The last one is hardly used though and if it's used it usually in backup-environments.
If you tell us the brand of the burner and model, we might be able to be of more help

MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D310
But the disc I used to burn (last week) was a DVD-R, 4X, 4.7 GB

I did some quick searches and apparantly that drive supports
- DVD-RAM
- DVD-R
So buying either of them should work.
If you burned a DVD-R in it last week and it works, stick to those as they are at least compatible with the majority of regular DVD-ROM drives out there
DVD-RAM is not compatible with regular DVD-ROM drives iirc.

OK, I went with Memorex DVD-R discs, thanks!
I still think it's ridiculous to have more than one standard.

Tell me about it
And with the successor of DVD (blu-ray) we once again have 2 standards

Remember that there was a standard war between CD-R and CD+R if I remember correctly. It wasn't really publicized to my knowledge as the final format (CD-R) won out before products were widely available. Basically same thing with DVD+R and DVD-R formats except this time they already have products on the mass market. I went with DVD+R and hopefully that will work in the long run. Then again, the dual DVD recorders are quite cheap now.

My drive supports DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W. I got all bases covered except DVD-RAM.
One of those formats is faster, I forget which now though. I think they are pretty much teh same, though.
But it still sucks that there's multi formats.
Course, whoever puts the cash into R&D wants to see a return on their investment. So if two people develop two different formats, who's to say which should or would win? Its not always the better format that wins, either. Beta (From what I hear, and for hte most part) is a better format than VHS. VHS won out, though.

Glad you got it sorted, though.
