Is my power supply dead?(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My AthlonXP 2000 system just quit turning on. Occasionally the fans will move a little, or the power lights will flicker when you hit the button, but nothing more.
My wife is the primary user, and she has said that it seems to have been shutting itself off on occassion. She generally would wonder if she had absently shut it down herself.
Does it sound like I have a dead power supply?
Also- are these hard to install? I have never replaced one. Am I at risk for killing myself?

Nah, they're fairly easy to install. Just depends on the case.

It's an antec case (sx series I think, but it's been a long time). The power supply in it is a 400w Antec. The weird thing is, like I mentioned, the lights will flicker very quickly when you hit the switch. I guess I would think that if the PS is dead, you would get nothing at all.

not necessarly ... it could be not giving enough power to the whole system. But i have to say it will be better for your hardware to replace it ... so that you don't damage your mobo and CPU

Also could be some dust getting into the power supply and interrupting the current.

Looks like the overload protection is being triggered, or maybe it is just misfiring, which may happen in old PSUs. Make sure that there aren't evident shorts (such as the mobo touching the case), and blow away the dust from both the PSU and the components.
Another possibility: some BIOSes have a option to turn the machine off if they don't detect a CPU fan, or if they decide that the fan is spinning too slow. In some old Asus card this is turned on by default, which kinda sucks if you have a new 2200 rpm cooler...

Hmm, thanks for the tips. Yesterday I ordered a 480 watt PS from newegg. When I get it, I'll take the 450 in my main computer and put it in the secondary computer.
That way, my main rig will be ready if I felt like getting one of the new nvidia cards (yeah right).
My antec case should still be under warranty, so maybe I can get them to send me a new PS.

The x800 beats the 6800 by far. The 6800's only advantage is pixel shader 3.0.

It was in fact the power supply. I put in the 450 watt PS from my main PC, and installed a new 480 watt PS in my main PC.
I got the POWMAX PSDE480 from newegg. It was only $31 total I think, and so far so good. My temps dropped a degree or two since it has an extra fan, and it has a cool blue light in it.
It's only slightly louder than before.
