Hard drive failure

Grrr. The same rig that had a power supply die not 2 weeks ago has now had its hard drive fail. It's an 80GB Western Digital.

The system tries to post, and you can see bios info come on the screen, but then the HD just makes a very loud kachunk sound over and over.

So now I'm at a crossroads. Do I replace the HD, and hope that this was a freak thing? Or could some other problem (maybe mobo) be causing these failures?

I guess I have to spec out a new system in the worst case, and would have to get a hard drive anyway, so there is no harm in just buying one.

Big question- does anyone think I have a chance in hell of pulling any data off this thing? Maybe if it were thrown in as a second drive?

Im not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I would suppose that a dieing PSU could have shocked components inside the case. So a dead HD after that is not surprising to me.

I would be more concerned that the mobo didnt take a shock...

I've seen faulty PSU's cause phantom problems long after the PSU died. HDD's, motherboards, video cards... can be a real pain in the arse.

I suspected as much. The mobo is still hanging in there, as far as I know. It's an MSI, I don't remember the model at the moment.

I'm hoping I can pull the data off the drive.

That's definitely a very likely probability. The #1 cause of component failure is heat. #2 is bad power. If the drive is less than 2 years old and worked fine for over a year, I'd put a large bet on power being the issue.

For the hell of it however, the first thing you should do is simply replace the IDE cable. It seems like every other time I see a drive failure, it's not actually the drive but crosstalk on cables gone bad. Sometimes you just replace the cable and the drive is fine.

Hmm, I have never thought about such a simple solution. I'll have to try it. As for the age of the drive, it has been hanging in there faithfully for about 2.5 years.
