Thinking about buying an electric guitar(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Don't want to break the bank on my first electric, but I'm looking for something of reasonable quality that I expect to have for quite a while.
I'm looking to play rock and blues, and was thinking of a Standard Strat or a Fat Strat. I also thought that since I'd just be playing at home, I'd probably just get a Guitar Pod for now (and probably a new sound card) and play it through the PC for a while before deciding on an amp.
Any inupt?

My advice is forget the big name guitars (as you pay over the odds for the 'label') and get a Yamaha Pacifica. There are various models but they all offer exceptional value for money and have had brilliant reviews. Depending on the model you can pay between $100 - $500+ However, even the cheapest sounds great. Oh, and I own one of the cheaper ones myself and I love it - wouldn't swap it for a flasher guitar.
Don't believe me? Check out the reviews:

What DD said. Even some of the Squires are nice. Take a peek at Epiphone and Vintage too.
In fact.. Picking a guitar purely on brand is useless. Best thing is to play a bunch of different guitars down at your local guitar shop and see which feels best. Even identical brands and models can feel completely different.

[edit] also.. Instead of the POD, why not a Guitar Port? It's a stripped down POD that has free online lessons with backing tracks from the big names themselves. And it's only 50 bux.

Yep, definitely try out guitars at your local shop - nothing beats that. If you do want a 'brand' name then, as Reck suggests, look at Epiphone (Gibson) and Squier (Fender) as they are much better value for money.

Hey Dan... I am actually thinking about getting a Yamaha AES guitar... Had fantastic reviews and after playing around with it for a bit I have to agree that it's absolutely fantastic, especially for that price.

That's what I meant.
And I'll definitely be playing around with a few before I buy. II'm considering the Fender Mexican Strats because they're in the price range I was thinking of, and most of the blues-rock players I like to listen to play Strats.
I'll definitely give the Yamaha's and Epi's a spin down at Guitar Center.
While we're on the subject, does anyone have an opinion on Fernandes guitars? The shop where I take lessons is a Fernandes dealer, and some of their Tele copies feel pretty nice. Their Strat copies don't feel as good to me as the Mexican Fenders, and I don't really have much interest in a Les Paul style or one of the "metal" guitar versions.
Thanks to all for the advice.
