Witchy, have you read her short story "Blood upon my lips" in the Cravings anthology? I'd recommend it. 90% of the story is more sex crap, but something happens that will (if the short story is canon) change the future of Anita forever.

Forever.

While I really loved the series and the stories, I will never pay for another Anita Blake story. I'm tired of it being fluff stories that serve only to give Hamilton more pornography to write. There was a discernable (at least to me) change at the point of Blue Moon, and after that the actual storylines have deteriorated. At least in my opinion. I'm really disappointed because I'd come to honestly enjoy the character of Anita, and her preternatural adventures. However, I'm not reading the books for the sex scenes; I want zombies and supernatural killers and vampires and wereleopards and...

I could even deal with all the pseudo spiritual stuff (nimir-raj, beasts within, etc) because the characters and the storylines were interesting, and the metaphysical stuff served a purpose and complemented the characters through the storylines. These last three books (Obsidian Butterfly, Narcissus in Chains, Cerulean Sins) and this shortstory have been more and more about the sex side of Anita. WHich is disappointing.

i like the sex stuff

i'm intrigued by her guilt between her catholic upbringing and what she needs for the audeur (sp?)

there's been a lot of controversy on the bb on her website about the new book, a lot saying what you've said. i'll still buy them, but not in hardcover and continue to hope that laurell gets the sex stuff worked through and back similar to the earlier books.

haven't read the short story. will have to look for it

Same here. Looks like it might be a contender for our first read

I'm about two-thirds of the way through 'Angels and Demons' on audio book. I wanted to try out stuff from Audible.com just to see if I like it, but I think I prefer to actually read. I keep falling alseep when listening on my iPod

Posted by: little red rooster

i have read angels and demons and davinci code.

A book I absolutely love is lonesome dove. But I don't know if many of you here will like it. I didn't think I would really like it being a western type of book but it is an absolutely great book. It did win the Pulitzer.

I got DVC for Christmas, and devoured it in a day. I'd love to see it as our first book. I believe it will make for some good debates.

Posted by: smeerkat

should we make a poll?

Heard alot of talk about this book, but still have no idea what its about, am Im too lazy to google for it. Anyone care to summerize?

Not knowing what its about, Im guessing I probably wouldnt dig it. Im too set in my ways to deviate too far from my normal forte, which is Historical Fiction, or as I like to call it "Real Fiction" like Tom Clancy's line of Jack Ryan books, as well as your Epic fantasy like WoT, Dragon Lance, Sword Singer by Jennifer Roberson, and Peirs Anthony stuff: Incarnations of immortality, the Mode Series, and Xanth ~ and Sci-Fi like the "_____ who sang" series, Stainless Steel Rat trillogy, and of course HHGttG

Posted by: RedRider

LOL...

we should get a few more titles so we can make a poll

1. Da Vinci Code

2. Angels and Demons

3. Lonesome Dove

"...While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. Solving the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci…clues visible for all to see…and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion—an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. The Louvre curator has sacrificed his life to protect the Priory's most sacred trust: the location of a vastly important religious relic, hidden for centuries.

In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to work for Opus Dei—a clandestine, Vatican-sanctioned Catholic sect believed to have long plotted to seize the Priory's secret. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's secret—and a stunning historical truth—will be lost forever.

In an exhilarating blend of relentless adventure, scholarly intrigue, and cutting wit, symbologist Robert Langdon (first introduced in Dan Brown's bestselling Angels & Demons) is the most original character to appear in years. THE DA VINCI CODE heralds the arrival of a new breed of lightening-paced, intelligent thriller…surprising at every twist, absorbing at every turn, and in the end, utterly unpredictable…right up to its astonishing conclusion."

Actually fairly well written. Might be worth a read

Posted by: Rurouni Storm

Darn, there's a 3 month wait to get it from the library

Sorry, but I can't afford a hardcover right now. Angels and Demons is still a pretty good possibility, though.

Just grabbed my copy from ASDA for £3.70

Posted by: Kosh

So, what's the deadline for reading it so we can discuss it? (Eric and I listened to an unabridged copy on our roadtrips last fall)

Posted by: RedRider

how about 14 days from now?

Posted by: Rurouni Storm

nm. Error on my part.

Posted by: BattleAxe Nancy

You guys still talking about the DaVinci Code?

Actually, I seem to have clicked on the wrong thread. I won't be able to read it until my cheque comes in and I'm still waiting for that.

Posted by: smeerkat

Please make another thread, (1) which book we are reading, (2) how many days do we have.

Posted by: Angerball

Any update on this?

Give me a few days to try and get things rolling. Have to find a bit of free time to set things up. But so far I'm thinking Da Vinci Code and two weeks to read? That sound good to people?

Posted by: Angerball

I'm happy with the choice of book, but two weeks can be too short a time depending on schedules. I can force myself to make time if everyone else thinks 2 weeks is good. Any ideas on the length?

Posted by: RedRider

how about 17 days?

that would work pretty good...I guess we all read a little different and of course schedules permitting...think you could read 30 mins each day? I am sure you could get through the Da Vinci Code in that amount of time...easy

Posted by: Angerball

lol 17! Would probably just make me forget when the last day was

I can live with 2 weeks

Posted by: RedRider

ok 2 weeks it is..

someone make up the post!

first book: The Davinci Code

due date August 15th, 2004

happy reading everyone!

Yup. Pre-press uncorrected proof. but it's teh complete story, and I didn't have to pay for it. WHich, as I stated earlier in the thread, way back on page 1, I'd only read any more of her stories if I didn't have to pay for 'em.
