How about some general rules for ediquette while posting here?

What the hell, I'll make it a poll Suggest more as you wish and we'll get a moderator to formalize it and sticky it.

I'll include what ever I can think of in the poll

/me puts on thinker's cap

[edit] That's all I can think of... some overlap. You are to pick ALL The rules you would like to see. Of course, not everyone will read them and use them, but some for of ediquette is better than none

/me still has a nagging feeling that she's spelling ediquette wrong Where's baz to correct me??

Posted by: BattleAxe Nancy

And mention any others you can think of here... I'll summarize and send to a mod after about a week (plus or minus)

You know, topic icons like they have on the atari UT boards would be handy here.

"Ediquette". How cute.

Just change the 'd' to a 't' and you're done.

One more thing I thought of...

BOTM in the thread title to indicate an official Book of the Month.

Now, I understand wanting to keep things organised, but this is a little overkill, don't you think?

Try to simplify these things a bit more Nancy.

Yeah, I don't think this poll is going to address the Book Forum needs very well, but then I can't think up a better way of sorting things out, because I'm lazy and would rather correct other people's mistakes than make my own.

Although, I would suggest that [F] and [NF] tags would be a good simplification for Fiction and Non-Fiction classifications. And I don't think that any kind of sub-category would be necessary, as if the person talking about the book doesn't provide the clues for these sub-categories in their summary/discussion, then stamping something with (as an example) [fiction][sci-fi/fantasy][epic][comedy][drama] might prove to be too broad to hold useful information. And if it's a well-rounded adventure novel, it might take every sub-cat going.

As for the other optional rules... I think the book title should be in the thread title, the author's name mentioned wherever appropriate and spoilers tagged likewise, possibly with accompanying spoiler code if discussing something not likely to be referred to later on in the thread and if it comes up again, well, just slap a SPOILER on it and assume that those wishing to remain unspoiled will not read any more of the thread.

So, basically, I think the forum needs a clear method to define the book in question (which would include the author's name as a means to identification) and whether it is fic or non-fic.

After that, I think feedback and a consensus of expectations might serve to keep the forum flowing smoothly. If something is asked for, it will be provided and people will learn what is appreciated in threads and what is not.

Did that sound sensible? We are GTFers, afterall. I feel like I should be wearing a tie, it's so goddamned cultured in here.

I don't expect everyone to use this stuff but using whatever suits the situation can help.

I think its alot more simple than it seems. Based on voting:

Simplified:

Thread Title Options
Full Book Title
Fiction or Non-Fiction
Mention SPOILERS! if applicable
BOTM (only for the book of the month threads so people know what everyone is officially reading - ie for book of the month annoucements)

Thread Body Options
Full book title and author first thing
Mention SPOILERS! if applicable

I don't really like the idea of having rules imposed to posting here.

But if you ARE creating a thread about a specific book, then mentioning the book title would be wise and if you intend to post spoilers, then it would be polite to mention there's spoilers either in the title or at the top of the post.

Posted by: BattleAxe Nancy

That's the idea... hence the term ediquette and not rules!
