Connections

Ever notice a connection or thread in the books that you choose to read even though they are of different topic, style or genre?

I often do and in wierd ways. I will read one book, learn soemthing unique, then go on to the next unrelated book only to find something that stands out as a topic I had just read about... Perhaps its best I explain by example:

I read The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasty and the Power of Mental Force out of interest. It was a book on psychology and free will. About 2/3 of the way through the book, the author discusses quantum physics. He talks about the multiple reality idea and the whole "if you flip a coin and its comes up heads in this universe then there is anotehr universe where it comes up tails".

Then, via a recommendation by Tut, I read His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Its a fantasy series for 'kids'. In reading this, I come across the same multiple reality theory of physics and the whole coin flip example. I thought that was pretty cool and felt rather proud of understanding it.

Then I start a book called Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco (Fiction). Within the first few pages, there is a mention of a place called Svalbard. This is the place where the armoured bears living in Pullman's His Dark Material. Not only did I not know of the place before reading Pullman's stuff, but I also happened upon pictures of the place just a few days ago. Now... I read it here...

Those kind of obscure connections happen all the time when I read. Its a bizarre sense, like it was meant for me to read the material.... Books, unrelated, yet connected in maybe just one odd sense.

That ever happen to anyone else?

Since I read mainly language and history books, I notice quite a few connections, yes. It doesn't happen with fiction novels, though. Although it does happen with TV.

Only the other day I learnt about something for the first time, then find a few days later two other programmes which only reference it and I think, "Hey, cool, I know what they're talking about!" Whereas if I'd missed my first chainlink, I would have still heard about the subject, but I wouldn't have understood what it involved.

I just can't remember what it was that I learnt now. I tend to "spend" new information once it's been acknowledge as being connected with something. Odd that. Maybe I do find connections in fiction novels
