Hi Y'all,

Been busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest lately. I haven't been able to get as much time writing lately, but I'm still plugging away. I've been playing songwriters' rounds and trying to keep up with contacts. I feel like I 've stagnated a bit on the songwriting front, but I'll get back at it. I've got more rounds scheduled... http://johnkscott.com/schedule

I have officially signed up to audition for the Bluebird Cafe ( http://www.bluebirdcafe.com ) quarterly auditions. The Bluebird is a world famous songwriters' hangout. Getting in to play the Bluebird as a songwriter is considered a prize. I guess it took Garth Brooks 4 tries to get in. This will be my first attempt. If I pass the audition I will be invited for a scheduled Sunday evening round with other writers. From there, people get invited back to other nights as well. For example, one writer I know got invited back to a feature round which included Tony Arata (he wrote "The Dance" which was recorded by Garth Brooks along with a lot of other songs he has had cut). This is kind of a big deal. You get one minute to do a verse & chorus in the audition. If you don't grab the judges...hasta la vista baby!!

I also have a publisher interested in signing my song "The Gift" to a single song contract. This isn't a HUGE deal, but it is at least a step. She want's it for one year and if she doesn't get it cut, then I will get it back. She, however needs a "broadcast quality" demo (I just redid the demo at home and you can listen to the new version here http://www.johnkscott.com/songs if you want. I still may have a pro studio redo it though. She also want's me to sing it because she wants to pitch it to film & TV as well with me as the artist. She will also pitch the song to indie labels to get their artists interested in recording the song. Even if she is able to do a lot of this, this will probably not make me a whole lot of money (maybe a few hundred dollars), but I'll probably go ahead and sign the contract. This song has been rejected for 8 years and it is just collecting dust. The negatives to this deal are that a) she's not a Nashville or major music center publisher (she's in Las Vegas) and b) she hasn't had any success placing songs with major labels. The positives are a) I kind of sort of know her and think she is trustworthy and b) she is really excited about the song, so she is liable to work it hard. Like I said, I'll probably do it.

Follow up news...

The one song I had (supposedly) on hold with a major country artist "There's A Lot Of That" is off hold (didn't get cut). I still have to update my website on that one. I'm not 100% sure that it ever was on hold now as I am trying to figure out if I can trust the person who told me that. Long story...but suffice it to say that I am investigating his credibility extensively before I work with him further.

The other song I had on hold "Daddy's Little Girl" sdid not get cut by the indie artist Jaime Beaver (who was being produced by the person mentioned in the above paragraph). However, he told me that he may wants to use it on the new project he is working on. The artist's name is Leci Simpson. She's a real good young singer. But...as you might expect, I'm not 100% sure how reliable this news is...

Anyway...long story short, I need a good kick in the backside to get back at this stuff harder again. It's tough to find the time but I need to. I can't short my family much more than I already do, so I'm going to have to figure out ways to keep getting more efficient with what I do.

That's about it for now. Talk to y'all later!!!

Follow up...

I found out last night that I did not pass the Bluebird audition. A writer friend of mine did not either and I though he did GREAT!!! My performance was good. It must have been the song they did not like. Got to get to work getting ready for the next audition. I know one writer who made it this time, so some do!!! (He did great job too).

Oh well...need to try harder next time!!!

TY Aggs!!!

I am having fun. It's hard to keep motivated sometimes. "Real" saps a lot of my time & energy. I slight my wife & daughter as little as possible. When I get at the "fun" work I'm usually pretty beat. Yet it is still fun. Just gotta keep on truckin' .
