Just finished Deus Ex game of the year edition - great great game - first time felt the need to join a forum - first time could be bothered! Need to get recommendation, which of the other Deus Ex game would you say is best to play next? I'm getting withdrawal here - the shakes are very bad! Need help...

You could play Deus ex 2: Invisible war, unfortunatly it's a letdown but there's no reason why someone shouldn't play it. As for other games that might match it, well let me tell you that after years, nothing gives me that warm fuzzy feeling of childhood memory more than Deus Ex and nothing will, it's just too good and ingrained in my very soul, but you could try Vampire: Bloodlines, if it wasn't for the huge amounts of bugs it could have been a great game and it somewhat matches deus ex in atmosphere and feeling.

edit: may i also suggest the zodiac mod which is a great

I saw the Zodiac mod - I'm gonna give it a go next I think.

well, DXIW isn't all that bad, when you do not compare the gameplay with original DX but considering just the atmosphere and basically the whole environment, it's great (walking around Higher Seattle enclave streets was just awesome, i spent a lot of time just walking and looking around.. it felt great..)

anyway, other good games, I didn't get the chance to play Bloodlines yet (anyway, I couldn't have with my desktop, Radeon9000 doesn't do much for current games... but my new laptop should be able to play it decently, mobile radeon 9700 should have some guts for it )

ok, i kinda stepped out..
I remember I liked Splinter Cell pretty fine, it's good, when you get used to mostly sneaking, not killing people and hiding bodies... although it's too linear way of playing, you have to do things one way and no other way is possible, so it's unlike DX in this aspect, it still was pretty neat.

oh yeah and final word Minx... don't worry about the forum joining.. I first joined a forum after playing (or while playing for the first time) Deus Ex too.... most people here are leftovers from the original ion storm deus ex forum from those days... man, is that really almost 5 years ago? incredible, huh?

oh and i almost forgot, the zodiac mod is very very good, pretty long in fact for a fan mod, and good i say again.. only thing i miss on mods, is spoken language :/ it gets a bit boring when you have to read all the convos..

oh yeah, also there was a mod, Hotel Carone which wasn't bad either.

and the mod we all wish had been finished, but unfortunately was not (and most likely will never be) was Face's "Disclosure" ... too bad it couldn't get finished I say again..

okay enough repeating myself, i better go to sleep, 6 hours and then a freaking stupid exam from business IT systems

I would say definitely try Vampire Bloodlines. The game system is somewhat different from DX, it's more along the lines of a traditional RPG, but it's one of only a few games that I've come close to liking as much as DX. Forsakn is right in that it matches DX in atmosphere and feeling. If you liked DX for the interesting plot, believable characters and detailed gameworld then try Bloodlines as I would probably argue that these aspects are better realised than in DX.

Other games to seek out include System Shock 2, Thief, and of course DX2.

Well I've got a fair bit to keep me going! Thanks guys!

Oh just about Splinter Cell, I don't think I've come across a more boring game! Yawn!

Actually, maybe here's a sub-thread - can you give me an idea of PC/PS2 games to avoid. I can start you off - The Getaway, Black Monday - what a letdown of a sequel! Talk about rushed into the shops!

Why didn't you like Splinter Cell? Was it the slow pace of gameplay, or linearity of it?

Anyway, one to avoid is Project: Snowblind. It was originally conceived as some kind of Deus Ex multiplayer spin-off, but it turned into its own game, and that game was a deeply mediocre shooter, unfortunately.

the game really was linear: only one way to get stuff done, etc.

Posted by: B.R.Denton

i agree that was a bad downside, however all in all the game was very entertaining for me, the full picture was simply good enough to make me get over the linearity...

Too much work has been put into Disclosure for it to just go up in smoke. At least that's what my thoughts on it are. Just think Duke Nukem Forever. One could say similar occurrences/delays happened to Disclosure as what is happening to Duke.

I've been around, just not much of a poster I suppose.

I agree, the game has no storyline. you could also try thief III.

Deus Ex mods that are great that you should give a try is the already mentioned Zodiac as well as Hotel Carone.

Then there is always the sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War. Sure, ain't even close to the first game, but hey what is? I still think it is a good game with great atmosphere, despite some bugs and annoying flaws. It at least captures the real Deus Ex-feeling at points and doesn't really deserve all the crap that has been thrown at it the latest 1½ year. Far from perfect, but still worth a try.

Then, there is System Shock 2, which you must play or else I'll haunt you for the rest of your life =P

It's different to Deus Ex when it comes to the missions and setting, but similar when it comes to the interface, freedom (in the way that you are able to chose your preferred style of playing the game; sneaking, gathering intelligence, using violence et cetera) and interativicty. They games also share the cyber-punk influence, but on different levels. The System Shock-series also focus a lot on horror.

The layout of the game and its missions are totally different from Deus Ex though. In System Shock 2, the entire game takes place on an almost vacant space ship, which you are to explore. In roleplaying terms, System Shock 2 is more like a classic dungeon crawl, but in a science fiction-setting (and the "dungeon" being a huge space ship) of course - where as Deus Ex is more about freedom and with a focus on conversation.
