there's a patch for running SS2 on XP and it works ery fine..
and I suggest you also download and install the Rebirth mod, changes models and textures with much better resolution and many more polygons..
anyway, i'm at school right now, but when i get home, i'll post you the patch right away...unless you find it earlier

The patch is available at Fileplanet, but I'll never registrate myself for such a fascist site again, so if you would post it here, I'd be grateful

how much grateful, huh?
ok anyway, here's the Prebirth Remix mod -- i strongly suggest playing even with the weapon balance mod, makes the game really better, i was suprised that in the regular version, the fusion cannon sucked ass... in this mod, it's a helluva strong weapon... kind of a BFG
oh yeah, and the 2k/XP patch is right here.. tell me when you've got it, i uploaded it to my webspace so I want to delete it then...
oh yeah and i agree, fileplanet sucks badly... i stopped downloading files from there about 2 years ago :/

Okay, I first installed the patch then did as the readme in the XP-fix said: replacing the old shock2.exe with the one in the XP-fix zipfile. Then it didn't work. Then I reinstalled the game and then I only patched it, and then I could run the game, however, it ends there as well. I can start the game, but I can't play it. Damn ;/
The guide at TTLG sucks, doesn't say much about solving the problem, only the symtoms.
EDIT: I reinstalled it again, patched it (but not with the XP-fix) and then I installed the Rebirth-mod. When I attempt to start, it says I dont have enough memory. It says I have 15mb and it needs 35mb, then I tried with the XP-fix atop of what I had already installed and the same thing happens.

hmm, strange, it works perfectly for me... just install it, apply the patch, then apply the prebirth mod... nothing else..
btw. what's your system spec? or more specifically, what's your CPU?? I know for fact, that SS2 can't run on a P4 system with hyperthreading enabled, as that looks like a dual-CPU system to SS2, and SS2 doesn't work on multi-CPU systems... so this is the only thing I can come up with, if you have a P4 with HT, go to bios setup and disable it..
[EDIT]
btw. try also this link : http://www.timmymagic.com/sshock2/ ... and their forums..

This is what I've got:
AMD Athlon 2600+
512 DDR Memory
80 gig HDD
GeForce FX 5600XT 256 mb
Should work fine I think.

heh, you're right, it should.. it works perfectly fine with those two things i told you to download..
on my PIII 1.46 GHz, 512 MB SDRAM, Radeon 9000 64MB,
as well as on my two laptops,
Celeron-M 1.4 GHz, 512 MB DDR, intel xtreme graphics 2
and
Pentium-M 1.5 GHz, 1 GB DDR, Mobile Radeon 9700 64MB...
no idea why it won't work with you
oh yeah and I do not use any compatibility modes, whatsoever..

That could be the answer, thanks for pointing it out.

Hmm, it starts now with the XP-fix, which is a step closer I think. But the game it self doesnt want to start, it starts to load, then it turns black. When I tab otu from the the game there is a box saying something about my videocard. Maybe I should install an old version of DirectX?
This is what it says:
Error: Direct3d device driver does not accurately report texture memory usage. Contact you 3d accelerator vendor for updated drivers.

Hmm, installing the old version of DirectX didn't help either. Must be something about my videocard.
Posted by: SlaveOne
Weho! Fuck yeah!
Guess what, the game is running perfectly fine now. However, I wonder if that Rebirth mod really works? I am not too picky about graphics, but the old Thief games and SS2 have really, really terrible models, and I don't know if the mod fixed that for me.

first of all, you're crazy that you tried installing older version of DirectX than you already had... that's the metaphorical equivalent of putting your big one into a lions mouth and flapping it's groin with a wet towel...
anyway, just look at the comparison screens, or even better, try installing the non-moded version and look if it did change...
[edit]
check the screenshot area here : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/etienne.aub...ock_rebirth.htm
there are some screens for comparison, especially the cyborg midwife..
Posted by: SlaveOne
Thats a huge difference. The midwife looks as though she was meant to be in UT 2003 or something like that. But how come it won't work? Is it because of DirectX?

Nevermind, it works fine, thanks for your help

Finally finished System Shock 2. Took a long break as I always do in the middle of longer games (I have no idea why I do it, I just do) and picked up again this weekend and finished it last night. Great, great game, but the horror I felt before weared off after I left Hydroponics and took the elevator to Operations. It was still a bit scary, but far from as creepy as before, but I guess it was because of the fact that on the earlier levels you were more vurnable.
However, it became very creepy towards the end, but in another sense. You became so immersed in the game that SHODAN's and the Many's threat felt so real and frightening. I do not mean the enemies luring behind each corner, I mean the threat they posed to all other life. I mean, who knows what human programmers will be capable of in the future?
I just downloaded SS1 from the underdogs and need some advices on how to get it work now Checked out the tutorial on ttlg, but it only directs me to other forums.

heh, the idea isn't bad, but i was still more creeped out from the first few levels, engineering and medical, you know, the "WEEEEEE SSSEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKK!" and "III''MMMMMM SSSOOOORRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!" ... when I was just walking around and started hearing this, I always almost pissed my pants and the ghosts... oh yeah, that sometimes creeped me out as well, cause you just don't expect anything at that moment and this comes up...
i still remember it very intensively, cause it's not more than a year since I played SS2 FOR THE FIRST TIME! yeah!
Posted by: SlaveOne
I agree, medical was by far the creepiest. When I went back there a few times for items and chemicals later in the game, it was still the scariest deck because of some unpleasant memories, and I was sure that horrors from the other decks had spread to medical as well, but I was wrong, still creepy though.

y'all are making me want to dig this out and play it again. and i'm starting to see that i'm going to be keeping an older computer around for some time. for no other reason than to play older games. it sounds like an easier thing to do.
