The Bartimaeus Trilogy - full review(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was half way through the last book at 4pm yesterday on the train home. I finished it at 1:30 interupted only by intermittent uncontrollable snoozing due to reading endurance deficit.
This series gets 5/5 from me. It was funny, smart, and compelling.
Bartimaeus is a djinni that lives in The Other Place where different levels of spirits reside. Human magicians here on earth (although in London, it was not modern day as we know it - i e no computers) can summon these spirits but it hurts their essence more each day they remain bound to Earth. They must obey their master magicians or be harmed. The commoners were not trained in magic but started to develop a natural resilience to some of it and formed political groups to overthrough the government.
Bartimaeus is a smart alecky, quick witted, cunning and boastful slave to Nathaniel who in the first book is just 10-12 (iirc). IN the second book he's the ripe age of 15 and in the third he was 18 (give or take a year in either). They have a bond, be it a resentful one on the part of Bartimaeus, and Bartimaeus helps to do Nat's bidding on Earth.
Three fantastic storylines which all tie in together in the third book. The climax lasted the whole second half of the third book right down to the last page. It was fabulous and I can't recommend it enough.
