I've seen a bunch of films so far, but I wanted to share some gems. Hopefully you'll be able to find these in higher quality video stores.
After This Our Exile: Taiwan’s 2006 Golden Horse Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor for pop star Aaron Kwok (who plays Sheng) and Best Supporting Actor for the boy. Cinematographer Lee Pin Bing (In the Mood for Love). Not typical Fantasia fare, but this film is worth watching.
The Banquet: Choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping, Zhang Ziyi (Empress Wan), composer Tan Dun and art director Tim Yip. This will likely appear in mainstream theatres, it's a big-budget film a la Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Awesome.
A Bloody Aria: This film reminded me of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, another violent revenge flick. Not for the faint hearted, but it's got a great story.
Memories of Matsuko: Amelie Poulain on crack. Directed by Tetsuya Nakashima (Kamikaze Girls) and based on a novel by Muneki Yamada. Excellent performance by lead actress Miki Nakatani (Ringu, Ringu 2). The film also won for best editing and best musical score. Must-see.
The Show Must Go On: Great performance by lead actor Song Kang-ho (The Host, Joint Security Area, Shiri, The Foul King, The Quiet Family and Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance). Not your typical gangster film.
Tekkon Kinkreet: Cutting-edge Japanese animation, and the director is American! Michael Arias also has a Montreal connection, as he worked at Softimage. Fantasia's opening film.

Exiled: Unofficial but worthy sequel to Johnnie To's The Mission, a classic HK gangster film.
The City of Violence: A fun, violence-filled movie a la Kill Bill with an awesome finale.
The Devil Dared Me To: A New Zealand comedy about stuntmen and the lengths they go to, to perform the ultimate stunt.
A Dirty Carnival Another anti-gangster film from Korea, liberally borrowing from Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface.
